A-Z of Racecourses

Hamilton Park Racecourse is a Scottish course, which can be found just to the south of Glasgow. A thoroughbred horse racing venue, it hosts flat racing through its season running from May to September. The first Hamilton Races began in 1782, and has grown part of Scotland's horse racing heritage over the years since. For two hundred years people have visited its course, amongst its numerous highs and lows, and it has held several great landmark events in this time. It was the first racecourse in Britain to stage an evening course on July the 18th 1947, and on May the 8th 1971 it flipped to the other side of the spectrum - becoming the first racecourse to hold a morning meeting. At the time, these innovations were seen as incredible, even scandalous, but they paved the way for courses across the country to do the same - and evening races are now a very big part of the horse racing industry. The present racecourse where the Hamilton Races are currently held was opened in 1926, and in 1973 it was bought by the Hamilton Park Trust, that remains its owners today. This trust is dedicated to putting back all the profits made by the Hamilton Races back into the course and its development.

Hamilton Races Information

The course at Hamilton is Flat and right-handed, and runs in a loop. It has a 5 furlong run-in as part of a straight. The track is not level, and undulates dramatically, with a pronounced finishing climb - a true test of a horse's stamina. The biggest meetings held at Hamilton are The Super Six and the Totesport Autumn Finale, where they offer two enclosures for face goers to choose from - the Club Enclosure and the Grandstand Enclosure. On the themed fixture days at the Hamilton Races, they offer access to all facilities as the open the racecourse up full to all as one single Club Enclosure. There is no strict dress code at the Hamilton Races, apart from on Ladies Night. On most racing days racegoers normally wear business attire or a smart casual set. On Ladies Night and Cash for Kids night ladies are encouraged to wear hats. Dogs are not allowed on the course, except for guide dogs.

Getting There

There are excellent road networks that connect Hamilton Park to the major motorways such as the M8 and the M74. Upon arrival by car, parking is completely free in the Grandstand enclosure, although they do advise that visitors leave plenty of time when planning their journey to the course as the routes surrounding the racecourse often become very busy in the run up to the the time the gates open and the first race begins. Arriving by car from the West, take the M74 and leave it at Junction 5. At the roundabout take the exit to Hamilton and follow the brown signs to the racecourse. From the East rake the M8/A8 and leave at Bellshill/East Kilbride exit A725. Then follow signs to the M74. At the roundabout again take the Hamilton exit and follow the marked brown signs. The nearest train station to the Hamilton Races is Hamilton West, which is around a 15 minute walk from the racecourse. Hamilton Park is easily accessed from the three major Scottish airports.
