The Hereford Races can be found on the edge of the historic cathedral city of Hereford, which forms a natural gateway to the idyllic Brecon countryside, which surrounds the course and can be seen from its stands. Every year, the Hereford course stages 13 Hereford Races - 10 National Hunt races, 2 Arab race days and 1 Harness race fixture. The racing season at Hereford runs for 9 months a year. The harness race at Hereford is something very rare indeed - with the first Harness race held at Hereford in October 2007, with history being made. They have proved very popular with the crowds of race goers, and there are plans to expand the amount and variety of Harness races that will be held there. Known for attracting a large amount of runners, the Hereford Races often result in exciting close finishes and over the years many of these have attracted great media speculation and astonishment. The organisers promise that their race goers will be provided with "a thrilling spectacle every time". The course at Hereford is owned by The Northern Racing Group, which is part of the Reuben Brothers Group of Companies. In total, the Northern Racing Group owns and operated nine racecourses in the UK, which include Bath, Brighton, Hereford, Sedgefield and Uttoxeter. The first ever Hereford Races that were recorded at Hereford took place in August 1771, with the first hurdle race at the course held in 1840. For many years, flat racing took place at Hereford - but the last flat Hereford races were held in the September of 1883 when after that they changed the course dramatically to its present jumps state. In addition to all the racing action, the course also plays host to a variety of events and conferences throughout the year on non race days. It is known as a first class venue for hospitality in the local community of Hereford. Hereford Races Information The course at Hereford is National Hunt, and runs right-handed, sharp and generally flat. The course suits a nippy type of horse, and has a rough square shape. In total, the course runs for 1 mile 4 furlongs in distance. For every lap of the course there are nine fences, with two of these being open ditches and one water jump. There is no strict dress code for general admission into the Hereford Races, although they request a smart casual theme. The policy on dress code for the Hospitality Areas of the course is also smart casual, and this excludes jeans, sports shirts and trainers. All children under the age of 16 are allowed free into the course, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. There are three enclosures at Hereford; the Premier Enclosure, Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure and the Winners Enclosure. There are Tote betting facilities and hot food and drink available in every enclosure. Getting There By road, the course can be found from the North via the A49 then the A4110 and the South from the A49 and the A465. There is free car parking at all race meetings. By rail, the closest station to the course is Hereford, which only a mile away. There is also a helicopter landing area at the course, although permission must be sought from the racecourse management before using it. |
