Northumberland's only racecourse, the Hexham Racecourse can be found the top of Yarridge Height, above the the historic market town, with the Hexham Races held around two miles south of the town centre itself, making it within easy reach of many of the local places of interest.. For over a century, the Hexham Racecourse has held National Hunt races, taking full advantage of the natural lay of the land in the area - rounded sloping grass providing an natural amphitheatre effect, which provides a excellent view of the surrounding countryside as well as the racecourse itself. The first Hexham Races were held on Tyne Green in Hexham in the 1720s, with evidence that there was a large and popular race held in the 3rd of May 1739. By the year 1793 there were several articles showing races were being held at Hexham Race Ground, with meetings held from then at Yarridge. The Hexham Races provide excellent viewing areas for everyone, which includes a good set of facilities for the disabled, including lift access to all parts of the stands and a special car park provided which also provided good views of the races. The racing season at Hexham runs from Spring to Autumn, boasting many weekend fixtures, a well as bank holiday races and the popular evening meetings.

Hexham Races Information

The National Hunt course at Hexham is left-handed, with the track undulating and severe, with the emphasis paced on stamina. In total the circuit is 1m4f. The Hexham Races course is not only available for racing - it can also hold corporate events, weddings, conferences, meetings, functions, celebration lunches and dinners on request. While watching the races, it is possible to enjoy a meal or a drink - be it a light snack in the bar area of the course, right up to a full meal in a private box or the restaurant. A caravan site is available to the racecourse - situated right next to the track itself. The Hexham Racecourse Caravan and Camping Site is a family friendly site, and all residents will receive half price admission to the Hexham Races course on racedays. The dress code at Hexham is smart casual, with no jeans or trainers permitted in the Club Enclosure or the Restaurants. As well as this, football shirts are not to be worn anywhere on the course. Children and families are welcome at Hexham Races, with special entertainment often provided for children at the June meetings. If accompanied by an adult, children under the age of 16 are admitted for free.

Getting There

Getting to the Hexham Races is easy, due to it's fairly closed proximity to Newcastle and Carlisle (20 miles and 35 miles respectively). It is a mile south of Hexham town, off the A69 and between the B6305 and the B6306. By train, Hexham station can be found on the line between Newcastle and Carlisle. On racedays a courtesy bus is provided, which runs from Hexham Railway Station with a further pick-up at the bus station before arrival at Hexham Racecourse. Full details of when the courtesy bus is available is often posted on signs at the station and the course, and more information is available by phoning the racecourse itself.
